Taiwanese speech to text, free in your browser

Tap the microphone, speak Taiwanese (Tâi-gí 台語), and get text back: a Mandarin transcript of what was heard, plus an English translation with audio. It also works in reverse, turning typed or spoken English into spoken Taiwanese with 漢字, Tâi-lô, and Pe̍h-ōe-jī. There is nothing to install or sign up for, and no cap on how much you can translate.

How it works

Speech recognition uses MediaTek Research's open Breeze ASR model, trained on roughly ten thousand hours of synthesized Taiwanese speech and built for the way real conversations switch between Mandarin and Taiwanese. Because Taiwanese is written far less than it is spoken, the transcript appears as Mandarin characters, an approximation that the translator then works from.

What to expect

Taiwanese speech recognition is hard, and no system gets everything right. Clear speech, a quiet room, and complete sentences make a big difference. You always see what was heard, so you can judge the translation for yourself.
